A healthy diet of healthy food choice is a balanced mix of dietary fiber, good fats, complex carbohydrate, protein, vitamins, and minerals with a little salt, simple sugar, saturated and trans-fats. New research shows that a diet high in fructose can deplete your liver of vital energy reserves. It was noted that without these energy reserves, the cells in your liver are unable to perform important functions that keep it healthy.

Fructose is different from other sugars in that it needs a molecule called ATP to be metabolized. ATP chemically stores energy that is used by cells in your body to perform important cellular processes. Without ATP, your cells can not work to maintain your health and life.

Obese and diabetic people are at an increased risk of damaging their liver if they routinely consume a large amount of this sugar. This is because obese and diabetic individuals may already have an impaired ability to produce the optimum amount of ATP. With the addition of large fructose consumption, they can seriously deplete the amount of ATP in their liver.

When you are constantly exposed to a large amount of fructose in combination with low levels of ATP, an increased amount of fat molecules are produced and stored in your liver. This can eventually lead to the development of a condition called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease or NFALD. If NFALD is not treated, over time it can develop into more serious conditions like hepatitis, liver failure and death.

On top of that, the amount of uric acid in your body can increase. And a large amount of uric acid can lead to gout, heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetic and kidney stones.

Unfortunately, fructose can be addicting in the fact that it is the sweetest tasting of most sugars. It is also highly available since it is found in many types of plants.

Due to those factors, it is the most common form of sugar added to sodas, candies, fruit juices and many other processed foods. Other foods that are high in fructose concentrations are high fructose corn syrup, honey, molasses and dried figs.

If you eat a lot of processed foods, juices and sodas, it is important that you first read the labels. This is especially true if you are already obese. Many of these fruits contain high fructose. Consuming too much of these highly processed fruits can lead to liver damage, according to recent research.

You can significantly reduce your chances of developing the liver disease by eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. By preparing your own meals with fresh produce, you know exactly what you are eating. Instead of drinking sodas and processed juices, make your own juice from fresh fruit, and drink tea or water. You can flavor your tea and water with mint, fresh lemons, and stevia.

We now know that consuming too much fructose can lead to liver damage, especially if you are obese or diabetic. To dramatically improve your health and fitness, eat less processed fruits and eat more fresh vegetables and fruits.
